> CBD is cannabidiol, one compound in cannabis. It does not produce the same high as THC, but a finished CBD product can contain THC and other ingredients.

## Meet cannabidiol

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a compound found in the cannabis plant. It is different from THC, the cannabinoid mainly responsible for the cannabis “high”. A product described as CBD can still contain THC or other ingredients. [1]

## A compound, an ingredient, a medicine?

These words describe different things. A bottle of consumer CBD oil is a finished product with its own ingredients and manufacturing choices. A prescription CBD medicine has a defined formulation and specific approved uses. Evidence for one does not automatically validate the other.

## Three things to learn before you buy

- The format: oil, gummy, capsule, or something applied to the skin.
- The contents: CBD per serving, other ingredients, and any declared THC.
- The evidence: what supports the claim, and whether it studied the same product.

## Your first route through the subject

Read [CBD vs THC](https://cbd.bike/guides/cbd-vs-thc/), then the [three common extract types](https://cbd.bike/guides/types-of-cbd/). Before considering use, take your product label and medication list to a pharmacist or clinician.

## Four things a CBD claim might refer to

The same three letters appear at several different levels. First identify which level the claim actually describes.

| Level | What it identifies | What remains to establish |
| --- | --- | --- |
| CBD molecule | The compound cannabidiol | Which finished product contains it |
| Hemp extract | An ingredient that may contain several compounds | Its measured profile and amount in the final product |
| Finished product | A particular oil, gummy or cream | Its composition, intended use and supporting evidence |
| Prescription medicine | A defined medicinal formulation | The approved use and conditions of that approval |

Research on a prescription CBD medicine cannot establish the same result for an ordinary oil. The formulation, studied amount, route, participants and outcome need to match the advertised claim.

[FDA distinguishes approved cannabinoid medicines from other cannabis products](https://www.fda.gov/news-events/public-health-focus/fda-regulation-cannabis-and-cannabis-derived-products-including-cannabidiol-cbd). Approval concerns a particular product and use. The [CDC description of cannabidiol](https://www.cdc.gov/cannabis/about/about-cbd.html) explains the compound, without verifying a seller’s formulation. Identify the exact product and claimed result before checking whether the cited evidence supports them.

1. **Name the subject:** Compound, extract, finished product or medicine?
2. **Open the evidence:** Find the formulation, people and measured outcome.
3. **Check the match:** Keep the conclusion within those boundaries.

Take one claim from a product page and identify the product, formulation and outcome in its supporting source. Record any mismatch.

Scope: This comparison explains evidence matching. It does not assess an individual product or establish whether CBD is appropriate for you.

## Is CBD another name for cannabis?

No. CBD is cannabidiol, one compound found in cannabis. A plant, extract and finished product can contain other substances as well.

## Does approval of a CBD medicine cover shop-bought CBD oil?

No. An approval concerns the specified medicinal product and use. It does not establish the performance or approval status of another CBD formulation.

## CBD, extract, product or medicine?

The compound CBD is different from an extract, a finished product and a prescription medicine. A shared ingredient name does not make them equivalent.
