> Pet CBD evidence concerns particular species, conditions and formulations. A product labelled for pets is not veterinary approval; discuss the animal, medicines and exact product with a veterinarian before use.

## Human evidence is not animal evidence

Species, formulations, and medical conditions differ. A finding in humans does not establish an appropriate product or dose for a dog, cat, or horse. A study in dogs does not automatically settle safety in cats.

## What the FDA says

FDA states that it has not approved cannabis for use in animals and cannot ensure the safety or effectiveness of these products. It recommends discussing appropriate treatment options with a veterinarian. [1]

## Bring the whole label

Ask about CBD and THC content, the other ingredients, batch testing, and possible interaction with your pet’s medicines. Do not assume a human gummy, oil, or flavoring is appropriate for an animal.

## If a pet ingests a product

Contact your veterinarian or an animal emergency service if you suspect an adverse reaction or accidental ingestion. Save the package, ingredient list, and an estimate of what was consumed. Do not improvise a treatment from an online dosing chart.

## Which animal question did the study actually answer?

Compare the animal, condition and preparation separately. The word pets hides differences that a relevant veterinary study needs to address.

| Study question | Relevant observation | What cannot be borrowed |
| --- | --- | --- |
| CBD oil in dogs with osteoarthritis | A canine condition-specific trial measured pain and activity. | Evidence for feline anxiety or a different preparation. |
| Preliminary work in healthy dogs and cats | Measured exposure and safety observations over a defined period. | Proof of treating a disease in either species. |
| An owner’s human product | Its complete formulation and intended user are different questions. | Suitability obtained by scaling a human amount to an animal. |
| A pet product with a COA | Describes the tested product sample and listed analytes. | A species-specific treatment or safety conclusion. |

The [2018 osteoarthritis trial](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30083539/) tested a CBD-based oil in dogs with a defined condition. The [2019 dog-and-cat study](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31635105/) examined pharmacokinetics and preliminary safety in healthy animals. Measuring CBD in blood does not demonstrate relief of pain or anxiety.

A dog osteoarthritis paper cannot establish that a cat calming product works. Species, condition and preparation all need to match. Bring the exact label, the animal’s medicines and the cited paper to a veterinarian. A body-weight calculation cannot resolve those differences.

1. **Species:** Dog, cat and horse are separate populations.
2. **Condition:** Healthy-animal observations are not disease outcomes.
3. **Preparation:** Match the actual ingredients and route.

Bring the product label and a three-field evidence card—species, condition, preparation—to the veterinarian reviewing the exact animal and product.

Scope: Small animal studies and limited observation periods do not establish long-term safety, every species or every pet formulation.

## Can a dog osteoarthritis study support a cat anxiety claim?

It does not directly answer that claim: both the species and the condition differ.

## Does finding CBD in an animal’s blood show the product treats a condition?

No. Exposure is a pharmacokinetic observation. Treatment effectiveness requires a relevant clinical outcome and comparison.

## Animal species and treatment evidence

Species, condition, preparation and outcome all affect whether evidence applies. Discuss the exact product and other medicines with a veterinarian.
